SEO and why it’s important

Search Engine Optimisation is a combination of on-page strategies (the stuff an SEO copywriter takes care of) and off-page activities (the backend stuff for the tech guys) designed to increase your search engine ranking. This pie chart created using data from SEOMoz represents the role different activities play in the SEO big picture.

There’s a lot of information about SEO out there, it’s a pretty popular twitter hashtag for a start.

Good search rankings are at the top of every businesses wish list, or at least they should be. But there’s a lot of competition in pretty much every category.

Google something. Anything

If I Google “orange umbrellas” I get 8,420,000 results. Just a couple. Too many websites to read in one sitting anyway. If your website is the 8 millionth website in a Google search, you’re obviously not likely to get too many visitors. Of course if you’re on page 1… I’m sure you get it.

That’s why SEO matters

According to research by Chitika from 2010, the website that ranks number one in Google receives around 34% of all the traffic for that search term.

Off-page SEO focusses solely on bumping your ranking up to help you capture some of that traffic. An SEO copywriter focusses on on-page tactics that help improve your ranking, but also focus on the visitor. It’s one thing to capture new visitors with a good Google ranking, it’s another thing entirely to keep them interested, encourage them to become regular users and ultimately, turn them into brand ambassadors.

A quality SEO copywriter creates a web content strategy that adds value to the user experience.
