The Copywriting Process explained

It’s not really as exciting as a magician revealing the tricks of the trade, but here’s the low down.

Copywriting’s all about communication and understanding. It’s my job to communicate the right marketing message to the end reader and it all begins by opening the lines of communication between you and I. Here’s how the process works…

1. Let’s discuss your brief

We can do this by email or get tech savvy and use Skype. I don’t often take face to face meetings anymore, I just don’t have time. I’ve explained why on the FAQ’s page.

To make sure I can deliver the work to you in the most efficient way, before I write the copy, the most important things we need to determine are:

■ The type of product and product category
■ Your target market profile
■ Your objectives – what you want your copy to achieve
■ The message you want to communicate
■ The tone of the message
■ And the date you want to work towards

2. I’ll send you a copywriting estimate

It’s just a short document that outlines our agreement. So we know we’re both on the same page.

The estimate includes all the boring legal stuff, terms and conditions and what have you. Plus one set of revisions is always included in the price – revisions include amendments to the copy based on the agreed brief. Once you’re happy with everything and you’re ready to rock, you acknowledge your acceptance in writing.

3. I’ll get to work writing the copy

You’ve delivered the materials and given me all the information I need to write quality copy for you. Now it’s my job to deliver copy that you love. Or more importantly, that your readers love.

4. I’ll submit the finished work to you

I’ll bend over backwards to make sure this happens on time. At this point you either give the copy your seal of approval (at least that’s what happens most of the time) or I can make any revisions you request.

5. You approve the copy and the job’s done and dusted

We’re both happy campers. Hopefully you’ll be back for more or recommend me to your friends…

I hope you found this page helpful. If you’d like more information about anything on this page, please email me. I’m more than happy to help and your query will help me improve my website for other users too.
